Bought a Suit Online? Here's How to Get It to Actually Fit

A suit bought online almost never fits perfectly out of the box, but in most cases it can be brought within an inch of a made-to-measure fit with the right alterations — as long as you started with a suit that fit you reasonably well in the shoulders to begin with.

Why Online Suits Fit Differently Than In-Store

Online suit retailers size off of chest, waist, and height measurements, but they can't account for your actual posture, shoulder slope, or how a jacket sits on your particular frame. Two people with the same "42R" measurements can need completely different alterations. That's normal, and it's exactly what alterations are for — the suit isn't defective, it just needs to be fitted to you specifically, the same way it would be if you'd bought it from a full-service menswear store with an in-house tailor.

What to Check Before You Book an Alteration

The one thing alterations can't fix easily is a jacket that's too small or too narrow through the shoulders and back — that requires rebuilding the garment's structure and usually isn't worth the cost. Before booking, try the jacket on and check:

Shoulder seams should sit right at the edge of your shoulder, not hanging past it or pulling inward. If that's already right, everything else — sleeve length, body width, waist suppression — is a straightforward fix. Pants are even more forgiving, since waist, seat, and length can all be adjusted significantly in either direction.

The Alterations Most Online Suits Need

In our experience fitting online-bought suits at the shop, the most common adjustments are: taking in the jacket body and sleeves for a slimmer, more current silhouette; shortening sleeve length so about a quarter-inch of shirt cuff shows; tapering the pant leg; and hemming pants to break correctly over the shoe. Button stance and lapel width can't be changed, so if those look dated or ill-proportioned, that's a styling issue alterations won't solve.

What It Costs

A full jacket-and-pants overhaul (body take-in, sleeves, and hem) typically lands in the $150-250 range depending on how much needs to move — still well under the cost of a made-to-measure suit, and usually completed faster than most online retailers' return-and-reorder window.

When a Suit Isn't Worth Altering

If the shoulders don't sit right, if the jacket is more than one full size too small, or if the fabric is a low-grade synthetic that won't hold a crisp seam after alterations, it's usually cheaper and better-looking in the end to return it and reorder a size up.
